The smell of popcorn was in the air this weekend at the 2010 Cannon Beach Film Festival, put on by the Cannon Beach History Center and Museum at the Coaster Theatre. Sponsored by the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce and Coaster Construction, the annual event featured seven musical films that entertained audiences of all ages.

The no host wine reception kicked off the event on Friday, June 4, complete with an old fashioned popcorn maker, sandwiches, punch, coffee, and wine donated by Bob and Sandi Lundy of Cannon Beach. Sound of Music followed, with a crowd of about 30.

Saturday was sunny out, so our crowds dwindled, but there was a pretty good turn out for Hair at 2 p.m., Across the Universe at 4 p.m. and All That Jazz at 7 p.m.

Sunday the weather was drizzly, and we opened with West Side Story at 12 p.m., followed by Singin’ In The Rain at 3 p.m. The highlight of the weekend was the raffle drawing, and locals Genevieve and Andrew of HRAP won the Hallmark Resort one-night stay and the JP’s gift certificates. Margaret Carlson, who owns a vacation home here in Cannon Beach won the framed photo, and an unknown visitor won the Warrenhouse Pub gift certificate.

After the winners were announced, Craig Shepherd taught the audience a little about the final film, The Fantasticks, which followed the lecture at 5:30 p.m. Craig, the executive director of the Coaster Theatre, worked on the film’s scenic design, and he offered some great stories about the show, and show business in general.

Thanks to all of our great volunteers who made this event special: Tracy Able, Tricia Gates-Brown, Marilee Sundown, Bob and Sandi Lundy, George Vetter, and Craig Shepherd. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Over 100 people came out to support the festival, and we raised over $300 in donations. Thanks for your generous support!
